Ocean Floor Map Study

[adopted from Dr.Grauss' Lab Guide for Geology 105-106 at NOVA, Alexandria]

I. Atlantic Ocean Floor [maps are photos of actual National Geographic maps]

    1. What is the name of the mid-ocean ridge in the Atlantic Ocean?
    2. How did Iceland form? [Can you tell by it's location relative to the mid-ocean ridge?
    3. Can you find the highest (maximum) elevation of the mid-ocean ridge above the surrounding abyssal plain? Where is the widest section of this ridge?

II. Pacific Ocean Floor [maps are photos of actual National Geographic maps]

    1. What are the five largest trenches in the Pacific Ocean called? Can you tell (hypothesize) why there always are volcanoes adjacent to them?
    2. Relative to the North American Continent, where is the mid-ocean ridge in the Pacific Ocean?
    3. Many geologists think that the Pacific Ocean is shrinking. Can you explain why in terms of subduction?
    4. The Pacific Ocean seems deeper in general than the Atlantic Ocean. Can you "guess" (hypothesize) why?
